in USA and Canada. Practices retreats focused on the Body of Light,
including healing, divination, rejuvenation, and Tibetan cleansing
therapies of significance in the Western
world will also be
organized at specific powerplaces, either in the EU or in
Asia. Such links with academic units, to be organized as
seminars and conferences online, will provide a meeting point for
the Western and Himalayan/Tibetan health
sciences. Body of Light practice and rejuvenation including
Tibetan Yoga introduction seminars to spiritual, physical and mental
exercise are sheduled in 2004-2005 in
S-of-France. Such experiential seminar will include esoteric
practices: channels, visualization and
mantra recitations. Bardo

translation in situ.
About formal Tibetan
Medicine Research and Training
At this date, there are
two main methods of training for Tibetan Medicine
doctors: the first one is through Tibetan monasteries and
community based Tibetan Medicine Health Centers training, the second
is academic and through a formal training
at one of the Tibetan Medical schools, these being either
in Lhasa Tibet / TAR China, or in Dharamsala and Sarnath
CIHTS, in India. To become a Tibetan
Medicine certified doctor under those modalities, one needs to
be a Tibetan, learn, practice and train during 7 to 10 years.
There are accordingly some serious
prior-conditions for any Westerner aiming to achieve any similar
results in this field.
Cairn Consortium curriculum options in KTM
/Nepal are based upon this reality.
Cairn Consortium
nonetheless offers hereby Postgraduate & Doctorate
Studies in Tibetan Medicine Research & Training,
which Options are linked with local
relevant Himalayan
Traditional Health resource people and training
organizations, such as: Amchi Jampa at Kailash
Tibetan Clinics; Amchi Kunzang, Amchi Tashi
Pedon and Amchi Kunzang Dorje at Kunphen Tibetan Medical
Centers (KTM and Nyalam TAR), Prof. R.P. Gartoulla at the Nepal
Institute for Health Science (NIHS) and the
TU/TH, the
Freedom Center SXSSC Drug- Abuse Acupuncture Detoxification
(NADA), the Shechen Gompa Holistic Clinic in Bodhnath, Geshe
Dergue at the Bon-Po Swayambu Gompa ( on traditional Tsa-rLung
training), several others reputed Nagpas on
Tibetan Dzogchen and Tsa-rLung practices being based on
Nyingma, Bon-po or Karam lineages, and/or - depending upon the
participants specifique projects requirements
(namely: each project's background, duration, specialization,
professional training targets, a short-list of other selected
resources in Tibet, Sikkim and/or
Dharamsala/Sarnath in India.
Although usually Tibetan
Medicine formal academic training exists for Tibetans
only, Cairn Consortium Euro-Asian Postgraduate and
Doctorate Studies endeavours hereby to offer relevant and
practical R&D approaches, based upon individual
research or training projects, certified under the ECTS/ECDL
adult education credits and being
especially tailored for
Westerners and/or Asian trainees (on a case-by-case
basis) and
researchers alike.
Tibetan Medicine Formal
Training for Tibetans
a) Community
Health Based Research &
Training
Tibetan Medicine
traditional community based training has been in
existence in the Himalayan region for approximately 2,500 years,
as such providing primary health care for the majority of the local
population, this, despite the emergence of the
PHC (Allopathic Primary Health Care Centers), which have
remained of limited development, far away and difficult to access in
the rural areas. Amongst those traditional
community based doctors, a certain number were and still are
trained in the local monasteries.
Focused on this practical
links between a Tibetan Medicine theory and its
daily application in Community Health ( Primary Health Care
and Health Education ), Cairn Tibetan Medicine Research
and Training Options is based on a daily
collaboration with
selected Amchis (Tibetan certified doctors), who
practice medicine since many years and/or whose healing skills
and organization have become reputed in the
community. Such are the above cited: Kunphen, Kailash, ITTM,
CIHTS Tibetan Medical Centers. Regarding the links with
monasteries traditional health, although most of the
time, such community based doctors do not receive a formal
academic qualification, they are all reputed practicioners
in their community.

b) Tibetan
Medicine Formal Training
In recent years, more
formal forms of medical qualifications for Tibetans were
introduced, primarily in the main teaching schools offering
seven-years medical training courses.
These Tibetan Medicine
established academic schools are not part of the
monastic tradition, per se, but rather are linked with the host
countries High Education system specific National Health Policy,
Health Ministries and development
agencies. These seven years trainings there enfold in two
stages:
STAGE
1 The first five years of the course consists mainly of
medical theory, leading to the recognized
qualification of Men-pa-kachupa degree.
Courses
include: Memorization of medical texts
Medical
theory Practice of pharmacy Herbals and minerals, collection
and recognition Tibetan grammar
Debate on Tibetan
medicine Medical astrology and astronomy
STAGE
2 The second stage of training emphasizes practice,
although theory is still important.
Students spend 2 years in
a clinic with a senior doctor before they are fully
qualified to practice alone.

c) List of Medical
Schools for Tibetans
Lhasa Tibet The two most famous schools in the
past were the Men-Tsee-Khang and the
Chogpori in Lhasa, the
capital of Tibet. The Lhasa Men-Tsee-Khang has
been established by the
Thirteenth Dalai Lama in 1916. When the
Chinese invaded Tibet in 1959, the school was temporarily
closed. The Lhasa Med-Tsee-Khang has been re-established in
recent years to provide education and training in Tibetan
Medicine in Lhasa, TAR Tibet region
(China).
Dharamsala The
Men-Tsee-Khang (Tibetan Medical and Astrology Institute -
TMAI) in Dharamsala (India)
proposes to Tibetans a Seven Year Formal Training Schools for
Tibetan Medicine.
Sikkim Lama Dr. Trogawa Rinpoche
re-established the Chogpori Tibetan Medical Center
in Darjeeling, Sikkim, India. There
are strong links with the monastic tradition in
this system of education and only men
are accepted as students. The current
director is Trogawa
Rinpoche. Also based in Sikkim (Kalimpong) is the
renown ITTM institute.
Ladakh The Ladakh School of Tibetan
Medicine established in 1989 in Ladakh, India,
runs on the same basis as the
Men-Tsee-Khang and is closely affiliated to the
Tibetan Medical and
Astrology Institute in Dharamsala.
CIHTS Varanasi U Sarnath The Tibetan
Medical School, Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies,
in Sarnath, Varanasi, India
also runs a seven year recognized course. The first batch of
Tibetan Medical
students were admitted to the Institute in 1993. Besides the
Tibetan Medical Course,
Sanskrit and the Tibetan language are taught at graduate level
to facilitate r esearch work at
the institute.
ITTM
This is a renown Holistic
Traditional Health Center based in Kalimpong Sikkim and
linked with
several reputed academic and research organization in India,
focused on both the Ayurveda and Tibetan medical schools approaches.
Although not an academic training center, per se, it is a
relevant INGO specialized in academic research.

Tibetan Medicine
Tibetan medicine is an
ancient synthesis of the art of healing, drawing on
the knowledge of medical systems existing in a wide region
of Southeast and Central Asia. Tibetan medicine was established
during the 7th to the 12th centuries A.D.
The fundamental
theoretical concepts are based primarily on the earlier
Chinese, Ayurveda and Indian Buddhist philosophy, as background
paradigms and systems of medicine. The Himalayan region
cultural context, religion notions and
Shamanic roots belief system underline the substance of this
system. Tibetan medical philosophy is a holistic philosophy
involving the harmonious operation
and balance of all the
energies that constitute the human psycho-physical
being. An
education in Tibetan medicine involves theory,
self-development, therapies and medical practice. The
theoretical part involves knowledge of the
theoretical system, the principles of diagnosis and treatment, the
medicinal products and the diseases. The theoretical system is
traditionally taught using the Four Medical
Tantra, manuscripts that are partly to be memorized and partly
to be intensively studied.

Cairn Postgraduate Reseach &
Training Options
Level 1 : 30 days Introduction
to Tibetan Medicine
Buddhism Tantra, cosmology, materia medica and
symbolism are deeply related in
Tibetan Medicine. There is no distinction between mental and
physical disorders, as
in Tibetan Medicine philosophy all such phenomena
are manifested at a single level,
being through the psychic centers
and channels (ie: Chi, Lung, Jinas and
Nadis).
As the
Tibetan medicine system is above all a functional and
physiopathological approach,
having its diagnosis based upon the concepts of humors
and five energies, and treatment
grounded upon the efficacy of Himalayan herbal remedies, the
current drawing of
a professional introduction to Training in Tibetan
Psychotherapy has required an
integrated Tibetan Medicine and Vajrayana/Tantras
interface.
Tibetan Psychology and Psychotherapy has already been
researched by several reputed Tibetan
or Western scholars, amongst who Tarab Ladrang Tulku
Rimpoche.
It has
accordingly now become more feasible for Westerners
researchers to study and experience
specific concepts, technics or artifacts of the Vajrayana, as
such organized in a rather more careful
and stepwise manner compatible with
the European
psyche.
Regarding Tibetan Psychology and Psychotherapy
Training, per se, Cairn Network
has organized in Nepal an Integrated Training
Network using specific
local resources linked to reputed Tibetan
Lamas/Rimpoches and Amchis
(doctors), as well as Nepal Shamans Healers, who provide
a flexible theoretical and
experiential curriculum for learning
Tibetan/Himalayan Therapy in situ, within
the Tibetan Vajrayana Gompas (monasteries)
or local Clinics integrated in this curriculum
proposal. These
experientials include teachings based upon the Bon-Po and
Nyingma-Pa Traditional Healing, Yogas,
Dzog-Chen and Termas tradition.
The
treatment and counselling activities are directly linked with
specialized social/health
services based in Kathmandu valley.

Philosophy courses
theory in relation with Tibetan Medicine
The fundamental
theoretical concepts are based primarily on the
earlier Chinese, Ayurveda and Indian Buddhist philosophy, as
background paradigms and systems of medicine. The
Himalayan region cultural context, religion
notions and Shamanic roots belief system underline the
substance of this system.
Tibetan medical philosophy
is a holistic philosophy involving the harmonious
operation and balance of all the energies that constitute the
human psycho-physical being. An education in Tibetan medicine
involves theory, self-development, therapies
and medical practice.
The theoretical part
involves knowledge of the theoretical system, the principles
of diagnosis and treatment, the medicinal products and
the diseases. The theoretical system is traditionally taught
using the Four Medical Tantra, manuscripts that
are partly to be memorized and partly to be intensively
studied.
These four TANTRA divide
the theory in four parts:
1.The Basis Tantra gives
the first introduction and an enumeration of
topics, systematical divisions and metaphors.
2.The Explanatory Tantra
treats the system of Tibetan medicine,
explaining the formation of the body, divisions of health and
disease, principles of diagnosis and of medicines.
3.The Oral Instruction
Tantra is a vast work on disorders, treatment and
therapies.
4.The Final Tantra is a
dense work on powerful techniques als pulse and urine
diagnosis and special therapies.
